The environmental management industry operates in an increasingly complex landscape where climate change, resource depletion, ecological degradation, and emerging operational risks demand stronger organizational preparedness. For institutions responsible for protecting the environment, resilience is no longer simply about responding to disruption. It is about anticipating challenges, strengthening capabilities, and ensuring continuity when circumstances become uncertain.
At the forefront of this evolving approach is Suzan Al Ghanem, Section Head of Organizational Resilience and Business Continuity at the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD). With extensive experience across food safety, hygiene, environmental health, and organizational resilience, Suzan has developed a professional journey centered on preparedness, strategic thinking, and operational excellence.
Building a Foundation of Resilience
Suzan began her professional journey in the hospitality industry in 2008, working in the fields of Food Safety, Hygiene, and Environmental Health and Safety at Rotana Abu Dhabi. During her two years there, she gained practical experience responding to food safety and health emergencies while developing a strong understanding of operational risks.
Her journey continued in 2010 when she joined the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, initially within the Environment Health and Safety Department. Her responsibilities included responding to health and environmental emergencies across the organization and the wider Emirate of Abu Dhabi. This experience provided an important foundation for her understanding of how organizations can maintain critical operations while responding effectively to unexpected events.
Over time, Suzan expanded her expertise by incorporating organizational resilience and business continuity into her professional responsibilities. Through the implementation and application of Business Continuity Management, she has contributed to strengthening organizational capabilities and improving preparedness across teams.
Enhancing Organizational Preparedness
As Section Head of Organizational Resilience and Business Continuity, Suzan’s role encompasses preparing the organization to withstand and respond to internal and external threats. Her responsibilities include working with relevant internal and external stakeholders to improve the Business Continuity Management framework and strengthen organizational preparedness.
She also oversees the implementation of Operational Risk Management in accordance with the Enterprise Risk Management System methodology. This involves raising awareness, enhancing risk owners’ capabilities, identifying and assessing risks, assigning appropriate treatment plans, and supporting effective control implementation and monitoring.
For Suzan, resilience requires more than documented procedures. It depends on an organization’s ability to understand potential threats, anticipate their consequences, and develop practical responses that support continued operations.
Leading Through Collaboration and Innovation
A strategic approach defines Suzan’s leadership philosophy. She conducts meetings, awareness initiatives, and collaboration sessions with internal stakeholders while maintaining engagement with leadership and management. Staying informed about international trends, regulatory developments, conferences, and workshops enables her to bring relevant knowledge and practices into organizational resilience and business continuity.
Her leadership also places importance on people. By encouraging employees to share knowledge, develop their skills, generate ideas, collaborate, and embrace diversity, Suzan promotes a culture where innovation becomes part of organizational practice.
Her work reflects a broader understanding of environmental management: protecting the future requires organizations to be prepared for uncertainty today. Through resilience, continuity planning, risk management, collaboration, and continuous learning, Suzan Al Ghanem continues to contribute to a stronger and more prepared environmental management sector.
